Happy Chinese New Year! I report to you from Hong Kong where we are enjoying unseasonably warm weather. I like this time of year in Hong Kong because everyone is pretty merry and even the most prolific workaholic takes time out for family and feasting. You can't help but feel infected by the city's optimism. I wish you a wonderful year of the horse! Good health, prosperity and many happy days ahead. 恭喜恭喜! x Eilidh

 

Today, I am flying to Hong Kong to get Book of Deer's new collection all sorted for selling. I am so excited to see my family and friends but there will be more work than play during my couple of weeks back. This is always a busy time of year in the fashion calendar, the factories close for almost a month for Chinese New Year and it's a mad dash to finish everything on time. Once we have our SS14 collection in our hands we will be organising stock, photoshooting and shipping wholesale orders. I find the scale of this process a bit  overwhelming as I prefer to be working on my own in a corner but it is wonderfully satisfying when it's all done and dusted. I will be returning to London triumphantly with SS14 all ready to go and I'll be sure to share some behind the scenes photos with you...

Hong Kong here i come!

I have become quite intrigued with Jackalopes recently. This is partly because I can't decide if I love deer or bunnies more, but mostly because folktales and legends of mythical creatures completely fascinate me. The Jackalope is an animal of North American myth and I only stumbled across its' story on one of my Pinterest marathons (pinning seems to be the only activity I can sustain without distraction these days!) According to wise old Wikipedia, The story of the Jackalope was "popularised in Wyoming in the 1930s after a local hunter used taxidermy skills to graft deer antlers onto a jackrabbit carcass." The myth of the Jackalope, said to be a hybrid of pygmy deer and "killer rabbit" is claimed to be painfully shy, able to imitate the human voice and produce magical milk. This fantastical creature has penetrated pop culture throughout the years but most people write off the myth as pure nonsense. Having said that there are references to a horned rabbit in Huichol oral tradition and in folklore of many Northern European countries (like the German Wolpertinger), so I'm going to choose to believe that it is perfectly possible there are antler crowned rabbits hopping around the world ---after all I believe in unicorns! So, having decided Jackalopes are the perfect compromise in choosing between deer or rabbit adorned clothing, you may find a Jackalope print in a Book of Deer collection one day! In the meantime whet your appetite for Jackalope themed things with these adorable creations I've discovered on my Internetting!

One of my favourite stockists of Book of Deer is an online shop in Japan called Moviegoer. Sawori, the owner, is a film lover and curates a selection of labels and pieces inspired by her favourite movies. Sawori draws parallels between the sense of escapism that comes from watching a good movie and wearing a favourite outfit. Both can transport you to a time and place completely different to where you are in that moment. Not only is Sawori's concept completely unique, she pulls it off in a very tasteful way. Her online shop isn't costumey in the slightest and she hones in on a certain aesthetic that, as a reader of this blog, you will undoubtedly appreciate. Sawori shares our love of off-beat characters, over-saturated photography, rural idealism, vintage styling and of course, peterpan collars! When Sawori made her selection from our AW13 range, I never thought it would inspire a 'Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou' styled shoot at an aquarium. I just think this is so cute! I love how she styles these pieces on her friends in a fun, natural way. Just as I wish Book of Deer designs to be worn!
