The conception of every Book of Deer season begins with a seed of inspiration that grows into many branches of ideas. I gather images that evoke a feeling I'm trying to capture and pictures of design detailing that I might try to emulate in my collection. In the good old days (i.e pre- Pinterest) we made mood boards the old fashioned way, cutting pics out of magazines and googling and photocopying. These days I create my inspiration boards on Pinterest, it saves time and paper! Today I'd like to share with you my 'Summer Camp' board that was the starting point of my SS13 collection....below is just a sampler. I was so chuffed when I saw that Rebecca of The Clothes Horse created yet another beautiful post featuring Book of Deer. I think she's outdone herself with this beautiful twilight photoshoot, it is precisely how I envisioned the Kindling dress to be worn. An easy-to-wear dress designed for the type of girl who frolics in magical forests capturing fireflies in jars. Here's what Rebecca said:

 "I remember catching fireflies in my Grandmother's big yard on summer vacations as a child--it used to mesmerize me to trap them in jars with holes punched in the tops, I could watch them flicker for hours. It's funny, I'm more likely to jump out of my skin if one lands on me now than I was as a child actively trying to hunt for them in the tall grass. Still, fireflies are pretty magical things--one of the rare sources of light in this world that generates almost no heat and sometimes they synchronize their flashes in large groups. I'm also endlessly amused by the "femme fatale fireflies" or females that flash a courting signal to males only to lure them in to be eaten...Needless to say they are neat creatures and I'm quite glad to have a dress featuring them." It is a nice feeling to know that Book of Deer prints can evoke feelings and memories in the girls who wear them. The fact that fireflies are a nostalgic symbol of Rebecca's childhood makes this post even more special.

Want to know how we made the glow-in-the-dark jars used in our SS13 photoshoot? Well, if you're a pinterest/tumblr addict like myself you may have seen this beautiful image below pinned and repinned and liked and shared all over the place!

This magical photo by Lissy Elle Laricchua gave me the idea of making some glow-in-the-dark jars to shoot along side our glowing 'Firefly'print! You will find countless tutorials of how to achieve this effect but THIS one from Panka With Love is the one I followed.

It's quite simple really...

✿ Get a few glass mason jars and a small bottle of glow-in-the-dark paint

✿ Dot the paint around the inside of the jar as far as your wrist dexterity and patience allows.

✿ 'Charge' the jar under a light.

✿ Flick the lights off and admire your handiwork.
