Holiday Snaps

I finally got round to sifting through my holiday pics… so here is a small selection as promised. I can honestly say, hand on my heart, that San Sebastian is the prettiest city I’ve ever laid eyes on. The food itself is reason enough to visit, we spent 5 glorious days feasting on pinxos (Basque tapas), brioche and ice cream. The restaurants were wonderful at every price point but my stand out favourite experience was eating at the famous and very classy Arzak, a birthday treat I will remember forever.

The sights were worthy of a camera better than ours but that didn’t stop us snapping tons of pictures of the ruggedly beautiful Basque landscape. I have always felt most at home near the sea and the coast along San Sebastian is truly dramatic. We viewed it from every possible vantage point- from the paved promenade of the Playa de la Concha, the peak of Mount Igueldo and the site of Eduardo Chillida’s ‘The Wind Comb (Peine del Viento)’

We also took a day trip to Bilbao to visit the Guggenheim Museum. The building itself is a work of art in its own right. Designed by Frank Gehry and constructed of a seamless swirl of titanium, stone and glass, the building appears to undulate as it catches the light from all angles. The artwork within became almost secondary to the sight of Jeff Koon’s enormous floral puppy standing guard of this impressive structure!

All in all, it was an amazing holiday and San Sebastian left such an impact on me that I convinced myself that I would have a holiday home there one day! Don’t be too surprised if you see some Basque influences in future collections

Book of Deer’s 1st Birthday

It has been exactly one year ago to the day that we launched Book of Deer’s first collection with a big party at Daydream Nation in Hong Kong. It has been a wonderful journey so far, watching Book of Deer take it’s first baby steps to steadily taking more confident strides.

Here are a few pics from our party last year…

Fairy City

I recently stumbled upon the work of Daniel Baretto through one of my favourite blogs Messy Nessy Chic. You all know how much I love me an amusing Gif, well these ones by Daniel elevate Gifs to works of art. Daniel’s manipulated photos merge forest scenes with urban elements to create a metropolitan fairy world.

Look at the lift rising in the background!

I love the combined sense of hyper-realism and fantasy… imagine if fairies really did visit little tree bars like this!

Book of Deer on Modcloth!

My favourite online retailer in the whole world wide web is Modcloth. It has long been a dream of mine to find my own designs ranked amongst other like-minded brands on that site. Everything about Modcloth, from the way they imaginatively describe each piece to the addictive browsing options, lures me into spending hours window hopping and compiling wishlists.

I was so excited when a selection of SS13 Camp Book of Deer was picked up by Modcloth. I’m getting a real kick out or tracking the ‘Loves’ and reviews!

Thank you Modcloth for making one of my dreams come true!

A little love from Hong Kong

As most of you know, Hong Kong is home to me. Having spent my formative years here, there is a comforting sense of familiarity and nostalgia within me as I learn to conquer this city as a real live grown up. However, part of the process of settling here again after 6 years away is finding my identity in the city as a fashion designer and not a school kid.

This is why local press for Book of Deer means a lot to me. As much as I believe the Book of Deer girl knows no geographical or nationality boundaries, I am pleasantly surprised that HK girls identify with BoD too.  You could say Book of Deer’s particular flavour of girly and quirky is not the typical taste around these parts.

The start of 2013 brought me some very much welcomed local press interest.

First up was a spread from one of the best local mags in HK- Milk Magazine. I used to buy Milk as a teen though I can’t read Chinese very well. Milk Mag packs a significant pop culture punch for a weekly magazine, they cover everything from fashion to media and food. I was thrilled to be invited back into their labyrinth offices to style a look from SS13.

I chose the Kindling Dress against a sunshine yellow backdrop and paired it with some fun primary-coloured accessories. We fishtail braided the model’s long hair and added rosy cheeks and freckles. She looked super cute.

 I brought along my UV light to get the dress glowing.

I love how the article turned out and am really quite honoured to have been featured alongside some other rising talents in HK.

Next, the Sun Daily newspaper invited me for an interview about my work. This one focused more on my design career than Book of Deer and for a brief moment made me feel like I had achieved something in my quarter-life. The journalist Emily did a great job translating my ramblings into a coherent and flattering article. She asked me a lot about the early days of Book of Deer’s conception and about my time at Central Saint Martins. It is strange to look back and see how much time has passed and yet simultaneously feel as though I’ve only just begun. Although each step of the process of building Book of Deer has had its challenges, I can look back now and say the thought of launching it was much scarier than the actual act of doing it.

If you are curious to see what I look and sound like you can watch a snippet of the interview here. I can barely stand to listen to myself without cringing to death but perhaps you are curious to hear what an odd accent/voice I have. (sorry about the ‘ums’ and ‘yeahs’)

Presenting BoD AW13 ‘Selkie and Sea’

AW13 Press Release

This winter Book of Deer delves deep into the depths of Scottish sealore and takes a swim with the selkies. Selkies are mythological creatures that take the form of seals until they emerge from the water to fall in love with hapless fishermen. Book of Deer’s AW13 ‘Selkie and Sea’ draws inspiration from these tragic love stories, translating nautical motifs and coastal landscapes onto wearable 1960s silhouettes and floaty tops. The collection spins a personal tale with imagery and inspiration taken from the designer Eilidh Ho’s own holidays up the east coast of Scotland.

Within an aquatic palette of sea foam and Atlantic blues you’ll find miniature Aran jumpers, bobbing seals and embroidered seahorses. A sailor’s oil painting taken from Eilidh’s seafaring grandfather’s house transforms the surfaces of navy kilts and silky-soft smock tops. Hand-drawn illustrations peek out of windows on sweatshirts and decorate bishop sleeves on feminine blouses. Biro drawings of islands scattered in a vast ocean decorate shift dresses like a willow pattern.

Book of Deer invites you into a world submerged in folklore and fantasy, tinted blue with the colours of mist and melancholy. This collection is for hopeless romantics with an icy cool attitude.

 I hope you love it as much as I do, I can’t wait for next Winter already x

Blog loving in the New Year~

The start of 2013 has brought us some lovely press in the blogosphere …

First up, the ultra eclectic Shiny Squirrel. An image heavy blog with some pretty neat design and photography inspirations..I was quite chuffed to spot BoD amongst the coolness.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Next, the lovely Meaghan of Larkspur Shoppe gave our SS13 collection a glowing writeup on her blog.
This is what Meaghan had to say about Book of Deer:
“I came across the label Book of Deer when I was wasting time browsing Refinery 29 at work last week.
The label was started by Edinburgh born Ellidh Ho, who grew up in Hong Kong and then went to London to study at Saint-Martin’s College (does that make everyone else think of Pulp, too?).  She eventually ended up back in Hong Kong, where this label was born in 2010.
Most of my favorite memories of Summer as a girl involve canoe trips to a place called Spider Island, making tin foil dinners, going to bed with my hair smelling like lake water and firewood, and singing camp songs while I hiked with eight other giggling girls. So, it isn’t any surprise to me, that I’m drawn to their SS13 collection, which is inspired by sleepaway camp (and even includes a dress with a glow-in-the-dark print of fireflies trapped in mason jars).
And, while it’s true that I have consciously been trying to steer my wardrobe away from cutesy as I get older (the label describes itself as having a “distinctive element of cute”), I can’t help it if the lovely printed fabrics -which are all hand drawn, digitally printed, and original to the brand – adorable fabrics and easy to wear pieces caught my eye. Plus, let’s face it, I don’t think I’ll ever stop liking peter-pan collars.”
Toronto based Meagan and her pal Alex run a Vintage Etsy shop full of just the type of adorable retro clothing I would hoard myself! Check out their shop here, if you like Book of Deer you’ll love Larkspur too!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

And then came a post from Liss of Daydream Lily. I’ve been following Daydream Lily since I was but a lost thing in college, wondering where I would find my space in the fashion world. Liss’ blog somehow captures just the type of aesthetic and lifestyle I strive to express in my designs, so when this lovely post appeared I felt a little glow of achievement. Sometimes the internet just amazes me, we can truly cast out nets as far as our wifi speed allows us and reach like-minded girls all over the world.

xx
