A couple of weeks ago I was invited to do an interview for Pocket Page Weekly, a monthly magazine for Japanese expats living in Hong Kong. I thoroughly enjoyed chatting to Peggy the reporter and she totally got what the Book of Deer girl is all about! If only I could read Japanese…
Our first stockist in Japan is Moviegoer Shop – A site dedicated to dreamy outfits inspired by movies. Moviegoer also stocks other brands that share an affinity for cute, retro styles- Dear Creatures and Miss Patina. We are excited to be reaching more girls in Japan!

I was incredibly excited and flattered when Marie Claire Italia contacted me for their April edition International Style report. Proud to be representing HK in such a classy glossy magazine!
Readers of this blog will know I am a big fan of The Clothes Horse. Rebecca has the most enviable wardrobe and all of her outfit shoots are so wonderfully considered. A recent camping themed post featured our very own Yarrow Blouse which Rebecca purchased at Modcloth.
I love how Rebecca layered the blouse under a pinafore, that is just the way I would wear it too!
Rebecca says:
“I don’t have many childhood campfire memories. Most of the marshmallows I’ve eaten have been roasted in the backyard over a grill rather than an open flame in the woods. The nights I’ve spent under the stars can be counted on one hand and are mostly remembered by small rocks pressing into my spine. My fondest “camping” memories are actually just when my mother would let us pitch a tent in the living room and it became an alternative blanket fort. All the joys of camping with none of the nuisances like bugs or humidity. Still, I couldn’t resist this camp-themed blouse by Book of Deer. The idea of camping is just another form of adventure and I can get behind life out of backpack guided by constellations and moss on trees…”

Here is a story of two wonderful bloggers on opposite sides of the planet wearing Book of Deer:
Katherine of Corgis and Cocktails and Katie of Coeurs de Foxes both share a love of our glow-in-the-dark Kindling Dress and collaborated on an adorable joint outfit post. I can’t express how happy it makes me to see these two girls make the dress their own, Katie’s urban wintery styling shows us how to carry the dress into the colder months while Katherine styles the dress for a day frolicking in the sunshine. Both girls are perfect manifestations of the Book of Deer girl I have in mind when I’m designing.

Katie and Katherine for bringing my designs to life!
I love Kiwi mag Coup de Main, they are just the coolest. Like them on Facebook and your feed will never be boring again!
I was very pleased to see our Brownie Ties on their ‘Finders Keepers’ list.
Shahlin wrote: “I love these Brownie uniform ties from ‘BOOK OF DEER’. They sorta remind me of ’Moonrise Kingdom’, which makes me infinitely happy.”
Speaking of being associated with the cool kids, one of our recent customers was the wonderfully creative Holly of Pannikin. Holly posted a pic of her dirty green Brownie Tie paired with a chic black and white polka dot shirt- a perfect combo if you ask me! See the post here
Holly is also the maker of these adorable hand painted wooden accessories- I have my eye on that bottom right brooch… it kinda looks like me!

As most of you know, Hong Kong is home to me. Having spent my formative years here, there is a comforting sense of familiarity and nostalgia within me as I learn to conquer this city as a real live grown up. However, part of the process of settling here again after 6 years away is finding my identity in the city as a fashion designer and not a school kid.
This is why local press for Book of Deer means a lot to me. As much as I believe the Book of Deer girl knows no geographical or nationality boundaries, I am pleasantly surprised that HK girls identify with BoD too. You could say Book of Deer’s particular flavour of girly and quirky is not the typical taste around these parts.
The start of 2013 brought me some very much welcomed local press interest.
First up was a spread from one of the best local mags in HK- Milk Magazine. I used to buy Milk as a teen though I can’t read Chinese very well. Milk Mag packs a significant pop culture punch for a weekly magazine, they cover everything from fashion to media and food. I was thrilled to be invited back into their labyrinth offices to style a look from SS13.
I chose the Kindling Dress against a sunshine yellow backdrop and paired it with some fun primary-coloured accessories. We fishtail braided the model’s long hair and added rosy cheeks and freckles. She looked super cute.
I brought along my UV light to get the dress glowing.
I love how the article turned out and am really quite honoured to have been featured alongside some other rising talents in HK.

Next, the Sun Daily newspaper invited me for an interview about my work. This one focused more on my design career than Book of Deer and for a brief moment made me feel like I had achieved something in my quarter-life. The journalist Emily did a great job translating my ramblings into a coherent and flattering article. She asked me a lot about the early days of Book of Deer’s conception and about my time at Central Saint Martins. It is strange to look back and see how much time has passed and yet simultaneously feel as though I’ve only just begun. Although each step of the process of building Book of Deer has had its challenges, I can look back now and say the thought of launching it was much scarier than the actual act of doing it.
If you are curious to see what I look and sound like you can watch a snippet of the interview here. I can barely stand to listen to myself without cringing to death but perhaps you are curious to hear what an odd accent/voice I have. (sorry about the ‘ums’ and ‘yeahs’)

Some more press that made me smile this week.
Adorable Katie of Coeurs De Foxes featured Book of Deer as her Follow Friday choice. In addition to Katie’s kind words (in both Polish and English) I was also delighted to see so many kind comments… they mean the world to me!
