Where it all begins

The conception of every Book of Deer season begins with a seed of inspiration that grows into many branches of ideas. I gather images that evoke a feeling I’m trying to capture and pictures of design detailing that I might try to emulate in my collection. In the good old days (i.e pre- Pinterest) we made mood boards the old fashioned way, cutting pics out of magazines and googling and photocopying. These days I create my inspiration boards on Pinterest, it saves time and paper! Today I’d like to share with you my ‘Summer Camp’ board that was the starting point of my SS13 collection….below is just a sampler. To see the images in all their glory and get yourself in the mood for the hot sticky days ahead, visit my Pinterest here!

How to Glow

Want to know how we made the glow-in-the-dark jars used in our SS13 photoshoot? Well, if you’re a pinterest/tumblr addict like myself you may have seen this beautiful image below pinned and repinned and liked and shared all over the place!

The Theory of Creation by Lissy Elle Laricchia

This magical photo by Lissy Elle Laricchua gave me the idea of making some glow-in-the-dark jars to shoot along side our glowing ‘Firefly’print! You will find countless tutorials of how to achieve this effect but THIS one from Panka With Love is the one I followed.

It’s quite simple really…

✿ Get a few glass mason jars and a small bottle of glow-in-the-dark paint

✿ Dot the paint around the inside of the jar as far as your wrist dexterity and patience allows.

✿ ‘Charge’ the jar under a light.

✿ Flick the lights off and admire your handiwork.

(step-by-step images courtesy of From Panka With Love)

And if you want to glow like a jar of fireflies yourself, be sure to check out our Twitcher Top and Kindling Dress in the online shop now!

xx See you with the lights off! xx

Holiday Snaps

I finally got round to sifting through my holiday pics… so here is a small selection as promised. I can honestly say, hand on my heart, that San Sebastian is the prettiest city I’ve ever laid eyes on. The food itself is reason enough to visit, we spent 5 glorious days feasting on pinxos (Basque tapas), brioche and ice cream. The restaurants were wonderful at every price point but my stand out favourite experience was eating at the famous and very classy Arzak, a birthday treat I will remember forever.

The sights were worthy of a camera better than ours but that didn’t stop us snapping tons of pictures of the ruggedly beautiful Basque landscape. I have always felt most at home near the sea and the coast along San Sebastian is truly dramatic. We viewed it from every possible vantage point- from the paved promenade of the Playa de la Concha, the peak of Mount Igueldo and the site of Eduardo Chillida’s ‘The Wind Comb (Peine del Viento)’

We also took a day trip to Bilbao to visit the Guggenheim Museum. The building itself is a work of art in its own right. Designed by Frank Gehry and constructed of a seamless swirl of titanium, stone and glass, the building appears to undulate as it catches the light from all angles. The artwork within became almost secondary to the sight of Jeff Koon’s enormous floral puppy standing guard of this impressive structure!

All in all, it was an amazing holiday and San Sebastian left such an impact on me that I convinced myself that I would have a holiday home there one day! Don’t be too surprised if you see some Basque influences in future collections

Birthday Musings

Today is my birthday! I am turning the grand old age of 27 which sounds positively ancient to me. I am now old enough to realise that youth is fleeting but at the same time still very new to this path that I am on. Book of Deer popped into my head when I was 24 and it has taken 2 and a half years to get to where it is today. I can only imagine what the next year will bring and for this reason alone I am pretty excited about being another year older!

Here’s hoping for a very creative year ahead! Thank you for being so kind to this little old lady… x Eilidh

Fairy City

I recently stumbled upon the work of Daniel Baretto through one of my favourite blogs Messy Nessy Chic. You all know how much I love me an amusing Gif, well these ones by Daniel elevate Gifs to works of art. Daniel’s manipulated photos merge forest scenes with urban elements to create a metropolitan fairy world.

Look at the lift rising in the background!

I love the combined sense of hyper-realism and fantasy… imagine if fairies really did visit little tree bars like this!

March 8th ~ HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY!

“Whatever you choose, however many roads you travel, I hope that you choose not to be a lady. I hope you will find some way to break the rules and make a little trouble out there. And I also hope that you will choose to make some of that trouble on behalf of women.”  ~ Nora Ephron
